OUR IMPACT

Since 2002, MANTRA has been a pivotal force in addressing the evolving landscape of tobacco and nicotine in the province.

After smoking rates peaked in 2000 at nearly 30% of the population, for over 20 years we’ve collaborated with our partners on countless initiatives to combat tobacco use.

2022

Created Manitoba’s Policy Resource Hub, an informative, interactive, and visual resource illustrating the tobacco policy landscape and its impact in Manitoba.

Partners: Health Canada, ASH Canada

2021

Launched The Menthol Mistake, a print campaign that drew a parallel between the disastrous 2009 menthol cigarette exemption and the failure to protect youth if a similar exemption is made for vape flavours.

Partners: ASH Canada, Physicians for a Smoke-Free Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Alliance for the Control of Tobacco, Campaign for a Smoke-Free Alberta, Saskatchewan Coalition for Tobacco Reduction, Coalition Québécoise pour le Contrôle du Tabac

2018-2020

Distributed over 1,500 Quit Cards, providing $300 of free Nicotine Replacement Therapy plus counselling services to low socioeconomic status Manitobans wanting to quit smoking.

Outcome: 3-year average quit rate of 22% (higher than the 20% target success rate of standard quit programs).

Partners: Province of Manitoba Health, Seniors, and Active Living, Winnipeg Regional Health Authority

Released Manitoba’s first Tobacco Reduction Report Card in 2019, garnering significant media attention for an overall grade of C for the province’s tobacco control efforts.
